Culture and heritage

Right at the heart of Brittany, Côtes d'Armor provides visitors with Breton culture in a concentrated form.

Set off to see some of the little charm-filled towns in Brittany:

Visit the towns of Art and History, and the Little Towns of Character, reflecting the Brittany lifestyle. Don't miss the castles in Côtes d'Armor, including the impressive Fort la Latte, archaeological sites haunted by myths, beliefs and legends, as well as the ever bigger cathedrals and churches from one village to the next. Lastly, you can also encounter history and art in the museums, education centres and architectural monuments involving all aspects of Côtes d'Armor culture from Antiquity to contemporary art.

The listed towns and villages of Côtes d'Armor are unique places, rural in terms of their limited population, but also urban with their history and heritage. Towns and villages in Brittany can be awarded 3 labels. There is one town of Art and History, nine Small Towns of Character, twelve Communes of Rural Heritage in Brittany and two Historic Towns.

Explore castle life and immerse yourself in the Middle Ages:

Lovers of history and old stone buildings can visit Bienassis Castle in Erquy, Bogard Castle and Houssaye Castle in Quessoy; Colombier Castle in Hénon or Roche Goyon Castle (Fort Lalatte) in Plévenon Cap Fréhel.
The Counts of Penthièvre, the Viscounts of Rohan, the Barons of Quintin and of Hunaudaye... All left behind castles and monuments in Côtes d'Armor, giving us a chance to experience medieval Brittany and to prepare to face the English, the French and the dreaded Vikings!

Menhirs, dolmens... the land of Asterix and Obelix:

As is the case elsewhere in Brittany, menhirs (standing stones) and dolmens have been raised all over the Côtes d'Armor countryside. In Côte d'Armor, there are over 80 sites featuring a menhir, gallery grave or dolmens. Below are the 8 biggest menhirs in Côte d'Armor:

Menhir in Park Menhir, Glomel: 8.50 metres.
Tiembais Menhir, Saint-Samson-sur-Rance: 8.50 metres.
Kailouan Menhir, Plésidy: 8.00 metres.
Coadelan Menhir, Prat: 7.50 metres, not accessible for visits.
Pergat Menhir, Louargat: 7.40 metres.
Rossil Menhir, Saint-Nicolas-du-Pelem: 7.30 metres, not accessible for visits.
Kergonec Menhir, Saint-Gilles-Pligeaux: 7.10 metres.
La Roche Longue Menhir, Quintin: 7.00 metres.

Museums where you can get to know Côtes d'Armor history:

In Lamballe, you can visit the Mathurin Méheut Museum. The Mathurin Méheutau Museum is Lamballe town centre. It is dedicated to a painter, decorator, illustrator, ceramic artist and sculptor who was born in the town (1882-1958). It is located in a traditional timber-framed house. Among the Breton artists from the first half of the 20th century, Mathurin Méheut is probably the most prolific, the most versatile and the most popular. He depicted everyday life in Brittany and scenes from the First World War.

Religion rooted in the landscape of Brittany:

Do you want to see more religious monuments than in the Vatican? Welcome to Côtes d'Armor! Down the centuries, the people of Brittany have built monuments to the glory of the Catholic religion with parish rivalries working in the background. A good example is Notre Dame de Bulat-Pestivien church with its 40-metre-high spire towering over a village with just 400 inhabitants...

Animals at sea and on the land in Brittany:

19 km away, if you want an activity involving animals, we recommend a trip to the Haras de Lamballe-Armor stud farm. 48 km away, the Grand Aquarium in St Malo and, closer to hand, 3.3 km away in Erquy, Les Attelages du Rocher centre for horse rides (Bienassis Castle).
